Since the market launch of ChainMaster products in 1994, the Saxon-based medium-sized company has developed into one of the world's leading manufacturers of lifting technology in the event industry and offers a comprehensive product range for all requirements from set-up operations to complex scenic movements to complete automation of performances. National and international projects are managed individually from planning through to implementation and user training, and the worldwide network of ChainMaster Consulting Offices, trading partners and trained service companies ensures optimal after-sales service.

ChainMaster works closely with the leading stage construction companies on the market, developing and implementing customer-specific solutions that are used in classic and modern theatres, opera houses, TV studios, multi-purpose halls or on tour. A wide variety of drives such as chain hoists, winches, trolleys, lifting platforms or rotating platforms can be integrated into the ChainMaster XYZ control system, enabling professional users to benefit from safe all-in-one solutions with optimum performance in accordance with EN 61508 SIL3 and BGV-C1.

The company's references therefore include venues such as the new Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Louvre in Lens, the Stockholm Opera, the Almaty Ice Arena, the Nokia Theater Los Angeles, the Kremlin State Palace, the 2014 Olympic Games in Sotchi, the Effenar Concert Hall and the Ballerup Superarena in Denmark.

Among other things, the first prototype models of the new SK series will be presented at this year's Prolight + Sound. The new chain hoists are dimensioned according to SQ P2, which was released in October, and can now safely hold loads of up to 750 kg over people according to D8plus with a static chain safety factor of 8:1. In addition, the IP level of protection has been increased to better protect the drives against moisture. Further models are still in the design phase and are expected to be presented to users in 2020.

Furthermore, a new control panel for the XYZ-SIL3 control system will be presented. The standard equipment includes a 19" touch screen and two analog joysticks. The console can be extended using two HDMI/DVI monitor outputs. Up to four joysticks and additional cue buttons for live operation can also be optionally integrated.

Twenty-five years after the launch of ChainMaster products, the company based in Saxony, Germany, has grown to become one of the world's leading manufacturers of hoist technology in the event industry, offering a comprehensive range of products for everything from set-up operations and complex scenic movements, to complete automation of theater and opera house performances around the globe.

The latest reference projects for the chain hoist specialists from Eilenburg include the Zaryadye Concert Hall and the Helicon Theater in Moscow, Russia. For the Zaryadye Concert Hall, twenty-four chain hoists with 500 kg load capacity and twenty chain hoists with 1000 kg load capacity were integrated into the existing in-house control system. The new hoists are equipped with absolute value encoders and load measuring cells and comply with DGUV V17 (formerly BGV-C1). The installation was carried out by the local sales and installation partners Stroyscirc and Doka Center. In the Helicon Theater, they decided on a chain hoist system for the set-up operation in accordance with DGUV V17. The system consists of thirty-two chain hoists with 500kg load capacity and a ChainMaster Protouch StageOperator control. The technical implementation also was realized by Doka Center.

In the course of the modernization of the Gessneralle Theater in Zurich, twenty-eight existing BGV-C1 chain hoists with a load capacity of 800kg were updated. The choice was made to install the Protouch StageOperator system here as well. The chain hoists were equipped with incremental encoders and load-measuring shackles in the Eilenburg factory and subjected to a UVV (accident prevention regulations) test before reinstallation. ChainMaster offers a variety of upgrade solutions for existing first-generation chain hoists, ranging from set-up operations to SIL3-certified scenic use, to allow customers to further utilize their hoists.

Another outstanding project in the field of theater installation is the renovation of the overhead machinery in the Kremlin State Palace Theater Moscow. In 2003, ChainMaster supplied a chain hoist system with computer control, which, after 15 years of reliable work, is being replaced by the current SIL3-certified XYZ Control System. The number of chain hoists has increased from forty fixed-speed drives to fifty-four new drives with 500kg load capacity and variable speed control up to 19m/min. The technical implementation is being carried out by the partner companies SIM and Stroyscirc and should be completed by the end of the year.

Safe setup-operation according to SQ P2

The D8plus StageOprator Series CM-850 was developed for the safe setup-operation of chain hoists corresponding to SQ P2 in direct control or low-voltage control and was presented for the first time to the public at the Prolight & Sound 2016. On the basis of its intuitive software and the integrated touchscreen the D8plus StageOperator offers a high level of operating comfort for mobile applications or in permanent fixed installations. The integration of load measuring cells ensures a secured operation according SQ P2.

In addition to an overload value, which leads to a complete shutdown when reached, the user can also specify an additional warning range.  The applied load values are clearly shown on the displays of the motor controllers and operating units. In addition, you can switch to a diagram mode in which the load history is displayed graphically in real time. The modern network technology also allows the configuration of the equipment from a network integrated PC on a browser basis or remotely over the Internet. Depending on the operating unit used, up to eight system parts, each with a maximum of 48 or 96 drives, can be configured.

To ensure an optimal overview, the drives can be arranged on importable hall plans and CAD drawings, which can be imported into the control system via the integrated USB and EtherNet interfaces. Password management ensures different users access with flexible usage rights. In addition to a variety of different control units with touchscreens up to 17 ", radio control units are also available.

The first reference projects include the Effenaar Concert Hall in Eindhoven, Netherlands, and the Ballerup Superarena in Denmark. The Effenaar Concert Hall installed 52 D8plus chain hoists with bearing loads of 250 and 500kg. Each chain hoist is equipped with a 2-track gear limit switch, a load cell shackle and a 24VDC contactor control. For this project, a 17" D8plus StageOperator controller station is used. In addition, a radio remote control with a 7" touchscreen can be activated. The Ballerup Super Arena uses 40 chain hoists with a load of 500kg in accordance with D8plus, which include direct control with external limit switches and load measuring cells. The drives are controlled using a wireless console with a 17" touch screen. Other reference projects include the City Forum in Euskirchen, the Congress and Exhibition Centre in Innsbruck and a sports and training centre for the German armed forces.

"Increased safety awareness regarding load detection is clearly reflected in the requirements of users and planners.  With our extensive product portfolio of control systems and various equipment options for our chain hoists, we can react flexibly to customer requirements and offer fitting solutions,” commented Alexander Hartung.

Modular and flexible

Due to high demand, ChainMaster Bühnentechnik GmbH is extending the proven CM-820 control series with a 12-channel controller for direct-controlled chain hoists compliant with BGV-D8 / DGUV V54 and D8plus.

The linkable control unit for 12 chain hoists consists of a compact and robust 19" steel housing with 6U. On the front side are clear directional pre-selectors with LED directional pre-selection display, on the rear are 3 multicore outputs for four drives of up to 1kW motor power and 2 grounding sockets for external loads.

In addition to integrated phase and rotary field control, further product features include a main contactor for the GO signal and a monitored emergency stop contactor. LEDs on the front panel indicate all operating states. The accessories required for link operation are included.

"With the CM-820 control series, even growing companies can realize projects with higher demands and more drives. These controllers can be used on their own for smaller projects, in collaboration with partner companies, or can be rented as additional controllers."
